GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 791104
Online quotes update is not working
Last modified: 2018-06-30 00:01:21 UTC
1. Installed GnuCash (latest stable release as of 12/01/2017) 2. Installed Online Quotes retrieval package (including Strawberry Perl); no installation errors 3. Followed the latest manual to crate three sub-accounts (two under Stock account, for AAPL and AMZN, and one under Mutual Fund account for VFIAX) 4. Added all three securities to the securities list. Edited each security making sure that retrieving online quotes was enabled. 5. Tried to retrieve quotes (Tools / Price Editor / Get Quotes); received a message that there was an unknown error retrieving quotes. 6. Tried changing the quote sources, and exchange where the securities trade, but the result is the same. So far, this is the ONLY issue preventing me from switching to GNU Cash from Quicken. Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Thank you Frank. I did follow the steps provided in this wiki entry, and it worked: 1) I did change the type of quote source to "Unknown" and the source to "alphavantage" 2) I was able to obtain API key from the Alphavantage website, and add ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY=XXXXXXXXXXXXXX to the environment file. 3) This worked for at least one stock quote (AAPL). I did not yet have time to test this for multiple stock quotes (trading at different exchanges) and for mutual funds, and will do this over the weekend. Thanks again for your help - it is greatly appreciated!
