Description Jehan 2017-11-19 23:59:23 UTC
Working with a Wacom MobileStudio (13" and there is also a 16" so even bigger), the on-screen keyboard barely uses a third of the horizontal space it should use. You end up having to type basically in a very narrow space and definitely can't type in a more natural typing position.

We were also noting that a numeric keypad would be definitely worth it next to the letters in the on-screen keyboard.

For a small smartphone for instance, it may make sense to have numbers in a different screen (and even then, some smartphone have such huge screens with high PPI nowadays than third-party on-screen keyboard apps now display the numbers with the letters), yet for a tablet-size screen, there is just so much waste of space. Having to always switch from letters to numbers to symbols, etc. is a waste of time and bothersome. There is really enough space for a mumeric keypad and even some symbols on the side of the letters.

Basically the on-screen keyboard should be adaptative. If the screen is very small, then having the switch to letters/numbers/symbols system as now; but when possible, merge the various keyboards as much as possible.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
