GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 790059
Gnome-Shell performance degrades over time
Last modified: 2021-07-05 14:44:03 UTC
The longer my gnome-shell session lasts the more laggy and unresponsive it gets. I am running an X11 session so I can restart it which fixes the issue for a moment. It looks like more users are affected by this performance issue which shows in many different ways, e.g. tilix' drop-down terminal opens very slowly in a long running gnome-shell session (https://github.com/gnunn1/tilix/issues/1178). I am running gnome-shell 3.26.2-1 on Arch Linux 4.13.2. I suspect the gnome-shell becomes unresponsive after a standby but I coulnd't confirm it at the moment.
So, it looks like the shell becomes unresponsive when I connect an external monitor after waking up from standby.
Might welcome a valgrind log.
@André I can't use the valgrind instructions from https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Debugging because I don't have a debug build of gnome-shell. How do I generate a helpful valgrind log?
You probably need to recompile gnome-shell with debug flags if this is still an issue.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
