Description Ian 2017-10-31 19:07:45 UTC
A few days ago I commented on an issue related to JPEGs, adding my own tuppence-worth regarding difficulties in using GIMP-generated JPEGs with Nikon's ViewNX2 application. After some head-scratching, which included downloading and running ImageMagick and Metadata++ apps to examine the before-and-after files, I found the "problem". GIMP adds a considerable amount of metadata in the form of XMP values that are not supported by ViewNX2 - which barfs on the "after" versions, declaring them to be "unrecognized file type." I found I could bulk-remove the GIMP-inserted XMP values very simply with Metadata++, making GIMP's "after" versions acceptable to ViewNX2 without losing any of the other metadata. Similarly, I found that Gromada's Photo Vacuum Packer app also runs successfully after removal of the XMP data.

So, not a GIMP bug, just different perspectives by developers of different apps, no longer a problem for me, and I now feel free to use GIMP on my photo library.

I assume that the ViewNX2 and Gromada's Photo Vacuum Packer developers would like to be notified of this then.

If you already did notify them, was there any reply? It would be interesting to know which application is supposed to be in error, if any.

Ian, any updates on my question?

Also, is it certain that the XMP data generated by GIMP was completely valid?

Ian, what version of GIMP are you using?
