GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 788887
Make Gnome photos touch friendly
Last modified: 2017-10-23 10:29:12 UTC
I have a touchscreen on a 2-in-1 laptop, so in tablet mode, I would like to be able to zoom in, or swipe to the previous or next photo. The buttons allow me to do that, but I think that most people are now used to the gestures. A nice sliding effect to switch the next photo would be nice also.
Zoom gestures are now supported in master (bug 783922). I'd be glad to know what you think of it.

Hello ! Great ! For a photographer, it's a pain in the ass to have to consider switching to Windows to show the photos to a customer or just for myself. I didn't install windows on my laptop, and I would like to avoid doing it. Question is, how can I easily test it, that's another problem :-P I don't know how to compile Gnome, but if I download a nightly build on the right distro, maybe I can test it in a VM ? But I don't know if the multitouch would work fine in a VM, I never tired... Any advise ? If I can help in any way, I would be delighted !
The zoom gestures will be in 3.27.1, which will be released in a day or two. So, you might be able to get the package from an unstable distribution. However, I'd encourage you to grab it via Flatpak which should work regardless of what distribution you have: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Photos/Download (The Flatpak builds are still experimental, so some things like online content don't work, but we'll sort those out in the near future.)
The FlatPak seems like a great idea. I will test and give my comments, since I'm a "heavy" user of this kind of functionality. Zoom / unzoom, manual and auto-rotate are also very interesting. Performance can also be a problem, since I'm looking at very high resolution photos (up to 42MP). But I guess it's different topics. An app as comfortable to use as on a mobile device would be nice though, it's missing on Linux (I have tried a dozen photo apps so far, none really does it as well as some equivalents on Android or iOS). So I'm glad to see progress on this one ! Thanks for your work.
Zoom is working quite fine, I tried the Flatpak on my notebook. One great additional touch action would be to use the "double tap". Either to go back to the gallery (I love to show photos in full screen mode), or to zoom instantly to 1:1 level, where the photo was tapped. But it's maybe out of topic here... In any case, good job on the zoom function, it's working fine. And the background color is darker on the Flatpak version, it's also MUCH better like that. Well done !
