GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 788691
Display settings for multiple multiple monitors not preserved between sessions
Last modified: 2018-02-05 10:23:22 UTC
When I log into Gnome 3.26 on my Arch Linux Thinkpad 440 connected to two monitors via DisplayPort plugged into a docking station. When I boot up the laptop, the monitor on the right (monitor 3 according to gnome) is the primary monitor and it is on the left with (monitor 2) on the right. If I make monitor 2 the default and move it to the left of 3, all is well after I hit Apply, but a log and login or reboot makes all the settings revert back to what they were before I modified them.
I have the same problem running Arch Linux on a Thinkpad T420 on a docking station connected to two monitors. Everything used to work fine until I changed from 3.24. When I restart, log out, undock / dock all settings are reverted. The following line from journalctl might be interessting Failed to get current display configuration state: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Name "org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig" does not exist
Same problem here on my Dell E6230, connected to 3 screens (2x HDMI/DVI, 1x VGA). No matter which of those screens I set as the "primary display", after rebooting the "left" one becomes the primary again. What I've tried (unsuccessfully): - Switching from Wayland back to XOrg - Deleting ~/.config/monitors.xml and ~/.config/monitors.xml~ I've noticed that GDM also prefers the "left" monitor... Arch Linux, just received an update for mutter, so everything is up to date.
Same issue here. My monitors.xml seems correct, but ignored. Here's my monitors.xml: <monitors version="2"> <configuration> <logicalmonitor> <x>3840</x> <y>0</y> <scale>1</scale> <monitor> <monitorspec> <connector>DP-1-2</connector> <vendor>ACI</vendor> <product>ASUS VS228</product> <serial>C7LMQS146415</serial> </monitorspec> <mode> <width>1920</width> <height>1080</height> <rate>60</rate> </mode> </monitor> </logicalmonitor> <logicalmonitor> <x>1920</x> <y>0</y> <scale>1</scale> <primary>yes</primary> <monitor> <monitorspec> <connector>DP-1-1-2</connector> <vendor>ACI</vendor> <product>VX279</product> <serial>ECLMRS015424</serial> </monitorspec> <mode> <width>1920</width> <height>1080</height> <rate>60</rate> </mode> </monitor> </logicalmonitor> <logicalmonitor> <x>0</x> <y>0</y> <scale>1</scale> <monitor> <monitorspec> <connector>DP-1-1-1</connector> <vendor>ACI</vendor> <product>ASUS VS228</product> <serial>C9LMTF180907</serial> </monitorspec> <mode> <width>1920</width> <height>1080</height> <rate>60</rate> </mode> </monitor> </logicalmonitor> <disabled> <monitorspec> <connector>eDP-1</connector> <vendor>SDC</vendor> <product>0x424a</product> <serial>0x00000000</serial> </monitorspec> </disabled> </configuration> </monitors> Here's the xrandr -q output: eDP-1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) DP-1-1-1 connected 1920x1080+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 268mm DP-1-1-2 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 598mm x 336mm DP-1-2 connected 1920x1080+3840+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 268mm I also have several of the following entries in my log: Failed to get current display configuration state: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Name "org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig" does not exist
Can confirm the issue on Fedora 27.
Updating to 'mutter 3.26.1+12+gd6e3193c2-1' had no effect, still Failed to get current display configuration state: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Name "org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig" does not exist

""org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig" does not exist" in my journalctl. Version of mutter: mutter-3.26.1+7+g41f7a5fdf-1
Same problem for me on Arch Linux and Debian SID but i didn't see any error messages with journalctl. I use and HP EliteBook 9470m with integrated Intel connected to one DisplayPort to DVI and one VGA.
Same here. Arch Linux, Gnome 3.26.1, integrated 3840x2160 laptop screen, one usb-c-displayport adapter connected to an external 2560x1440 screen, and one hdmi cord connected to an external 1920x1080 monitor.
Also I'm running wayland
Gnome 3.26, debian testing, running on X11, same issue. My config is similar to the first comment: Thinkpad T430s on the dock with two external monitors with the *right* one as main. I can arrange it that way but it does not stick. I does not survive Alt-F2-r. This is *very* uncomfortable. Also the new configuration dialog is *very* buggy. But that is a matter for the other bug report.

This appears to be solved for me with mutter 3.26.2+31+gbf91e2b4c-1 on ArchLinux
yes, it's also fixed for me - on arch. Thanks =)

Lets assume its fixed.
Please do not, at least yet! It may be misconfig on my side but I have trouble finding the place. I have noticed this when I run gnome-control-center from the terminal: Config not applicable: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.AccessDenied: The requested configuration is based on stale information All files in my home directory are owned by me. Can I check something else?
