Attached patch converts ASCII characters to Unicode, as recommended by <https://developer.gnome.org/hig/stable/typography.html>.

Thanks! I've pushed your patch to current master. My only real concern with doing this is that it seems extremely likely that we (by which I mean "I") will almost certainly reintroduce non-typographically-correct usages out of habit. Do you happen to know whether other projects have figured out some kind of testing to ensure that this situation doesn't arise?
That was fast, thank you! I don’t think anyone figured out any automation yet. I agree that it would be nice to have something. For now, I act as a self-appointed fixer of typography, so don’t worry about it. :)
