Description Jean-François Fortin Tam 2017-09-21 14:41:37 UTC
Evolution has a nice template reply feature: https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/stable/mail-composer-message-templates.html.en

The problem is that it is only discoverable in the contextual popup menu that shows up when you right-click a message in a folder's messages treeview, and even then it's not clear, as it is at the very bottom (far from the "Reply" actions) and labelled:

  Templates >

It would be clearer if it was moved up in the menu and relabelled, like this:

  Reply to Sender
  Reply to All
  Reply with template >
  Forward

Furthermore, it shouldn't be only in the right-click menu, but also in the "Message" menu in the top menubar, for discoverability (since the main menubar is supposed to contain all possible actions).

Thanks for a bug report. I think it can be done, though the change to add it in the main menu might be disputable, some users claim that the menu is too long already. I'm not against it, I'm just saying it.

I'd also mention here what I wrote at bug #787988 comment #3, the part with:
> (I just noticed, the message sent with a template is not a real reply, it has
> no In-Reply-To or References, unless the original message had it, in which
> case it's copied from there, but not updated).

Which also means that the Templates are not real replies. The thing gets even more complicated when you consider how many options Replies can have, which are Reply to Sender, Reply to List, Reply to All. Which of them to use when using templates?

I vaguely recall a request to be able to apply templates inside composer, which might solve some of the issues (say you reply to a message, then in the composer will pick File->Apply Template->... and it'll use the content of the composer as the source and will modify body/attachments/recipients/headers and so on).

Changes for bug #602612 added "Alternative Reply" menu option, which also allows replying with a template. This dialog is more powerful, from my point of view.

Can we consider this bug covered by that change?

The bug about template chooser in the composer is bug #560480.

I'd still advocate for having the menus consistent from one place to another, but if you prefer not, then yeah I guess this could be closed as "Replaced by the Alternative Reply feature elsewhere".

Different year, different mind. Being this basically about the rename of the 'Templates' submenu and its movement in between the other reply methods, then I'd say it makes perfect sense to do it.

Fixed with commit c49a647113 for 3.39.1+.
