Description Florian Müllner 2017-09-08 14:36:24 UTC
See patch. This requires a UI freeze break, but hopefully allows me to finally break the design back-and-forth and get a.92 tarball out in time for the 3.26.0 deadline ...

panel: Disable top bar transparency (by default)

The top bar transparency introduced earlier this cycle isn't as
polished as we'd like it to be, and there's no quick fix. So for
now, go back to the previously used solid top bar by hiding the
feature behind a toggle option that defaults to false - that way,
it is still possible for extensions or downstreams like Endless
to easily reenable the feature.

Is there more info on "not as polished"?

FWIW, I think that transparency as implmented had problems (see my comments on https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=747163), but I'm curious what decided this reversion (it's not mentioned at https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-doc-list/2017-September/msg00012.html)

I'd prefer a straight commit revert if you intend this to land for 3.26.0. Downstreams can easily patch back in
Comment 4 Florian Müllner 2017-09-17 22:09:31 UTC
The freeze break request for this bug didn't get enough approvals, so I consider this obsolete - instead of pushing a UI change in 3.26.1, we will be better off with polishing what we have.

im as a common gnome user agree with this by following reason:

1.my experience going back and forth from transparency to solid black top bar makes incostitency view and not very nice astethics

2.i dont get the paradigm of spacious feeling, solid top bar will likely trigered more often making the transparency bar obsolete

3.the text in transparent top bar get obscured by background pattern, light color and brightness making less user friendly and limiting the user choice

4.today trend is flat color not transparency, flat color is cleaner, understanable and easy to view by midle ages to grandpas

some user dont prefe this, i suggest to make it as option and not by default
