screenshot showing the issue

Using gnome-shell 3.24.2 on Ubuntu (that could be a gdm issue, unsure what component is involved in the rendering of the greeter)

on the login screen
- select an user
- type a wrong password
- when the error string is displayed hit "esc"

-> the password entry is displayed on top of the user description (see screenshot)
