Description Rob 2017-07-18 16:48:38 UTC
Greetings Developers,

I am new to the gnome bugzilla, so please excuse me.
Long time user of photoshop; investigating GIMP as an alternative for production.

Perhaps there exists a simpler way to operate with transparency, but I could not get it to operate upon initial inspection.

I have since then googled some solutions, but why did I have to initiate a search for something as simple as transparent PNG?

My real questions is this;
What can we do to simplify the usage of GIMP to generate PNG files with transparency?

I have experienced Hardened engineers abort usage of GIMP, because the transparency did not operate as expected.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Have a one-layer image with alpha, export to PNG.

I don't understand what you mean.
Comment 2 Michael Schumacher 2017-07-19 08:20:51 UTC
So what was the issue?

(My guess: the fact that images do not get an alpha channel regardless of whether they have one or their file format even supports one).

Rob, we need a better description of what you wanted to achieve, why you couldn't achieve it at first, and what helped you to achieve it in the end.

Greetings,

Please consider the following manufacturing scenario.

We pull a JPEG from our commercial licensed image stock.

Engineer opens JPEG using GIMP.

Engineer is able to understand and perform rotate and crop operation without issue.

Engineer cannot perform transparency operation for currently opened document.

These are very smart computer operators, that will request budget for Photoshop given any inconvenience due to spin-up.

I would like to see some simplification for transparency, because 90% of the image altering features were self-explanatory upon initial GIMP usage.

This transparency issue was the deal breaker for production usage.

Thanks!
Rob

Duplicate of bug 778523?
Comment 5 Rob 2017-07-19 21:21:30 UTC
I have reviewed 778523 and related bugs.
These seem like pre-requisites for the transparent operation sought.
My engineers have requested ability to select region and delete for transparency.
This requires alpha layer when opening a JPEG.
This requires modification of delete key input operation.

Thanks!
Comment 6 Michael Schumacher 2017-07-19 21:38:54 UTC
The delete key deletes to transparency if the layer has an alpha channel. And being able to configure if an imported image - such as a JPEG file - has this added automatically is what bug 778523 is about.
Comment 7 Rob 2017-07-19 22:40:39 UTC
fantastic!

So this feature has been previously documented and implemented.
Will the next release include the solution?

thanks,
Rob

It will be in 2.10, and in future development releases.
