Description Don R. 2017-05-29 11:02:55 UTC
In Gimp 2.8.22, the text (that does not have a bold version) still gets cut off at the top and sometimes also on the sides when you select BOLD button. None of my other programs, like Word and Drawing Programs, have this issue. In the past, I've had my customers make donations to GIMP as part of their contract with me. I'd like to continue that but even more so with future projects. Please fix this so we don't have to resort to work-a-rounds to simulate the effect. Thanks - D.R.

Hello, did it start happening with 2.8.22 or an earlier version? Which fonts can we replicate the issue with?

So is this same as bug 720475?

If it is the same bug, then this has been an issue for 4 years. Doesn't give me much hope that it will get resolved.

You can replicate this issue with pretty much any font on any system that does not have a BOLD version of that particular font already installed on that system. In my case, I was trying to use Arial Rounded MT Bold yesterday. Despite the name of the font, it is the normal version of that font meaning it's just a thicker font. It can be made BOLD-er in other programs.

For example, let's pretend your system did not come with Times New Roman. So you download and install only the following:
Times New Roman Regular
Times New Roman Italic

But you fail to also download and install these other versions of the same font:
Times New Roman Bold
Times New Roman Bold Italic

You will be able to replicate the problem. It's not an issue in most other programs like Word because clicking the bold button will make it bold despite not having the bold version. I imagine the same issue happens when you italicize. It's as if the text box cannot handle the change. Hope that gives you a better understanding of the issue.

As an IT & graphics guy, I'm going to download more fonts to test. I'll compare TTF vs OTF. I'll install just the regular versions without installing BOLD or ITALICS to see what happens. And yes, I'll make sure the text box is large enough to contain the text.

Here are just some of the fonts I've tested this morning that do not bold (without cutting off) in GIMP on my system:

Lucinda Calligraphy Italic
Lucida Handwriting Italic
Brush Script MT Italic
Carrington Regular
Connecticut Italic
Edwardian Script ITC Semi-Expanded
Gigi Regular
Vivaldi Italic Condensed
Vladimir Script
Viner Hand ITC
Algerian Extra-Condensed
Bermuda Script
Curlz MT
Informal Roman,

As I toggle between bold & regular, I'm noticing that when you bold in GIMP that some fonts grow vertically and some grow horizontally. The vertical ones have the top cut off issue obviously. The fancier the font the more it cuts off (like rounded and script type of fonts).

Wish I knew programming so I could better help solve this issue. But I'll test as much as possible. I'm more of a network systems engineer and graphic designer (odd combo I know).

Resolving as a duplicate of bug 720475, where the reason - an issue in libfreetype - is discussed.
