GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 782380
Login screen doesn't show up on the external monitor when the laptop lid is closed
Last modified: 2017-05-09 16:37:02 UTC
When you start a laptop with its lid closed and an external monitor connected, the login screen should appear on the external monitor. But it doesn't in 3.22 and 3.24 and it's a regression from previous releases where it worked. I'm running Fedora, it occurs on both F25 and F26.
The issue seems to be lower in the stack because upower reports a wrong value for the lid status. Once you open the lid it starts reporting it correctly again.
As discussed on IRC it seems this is a deliberate (though perhaps not fully thought through) kernel regression: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=77e9a4aa9de10cc1418bf9a892366988802a8025
