It is annoying when viewing a directory of images to be forced to view them by order of filename. In some cases it is much more useful to be able to view them by modification date. An example is where you have a directory of photos of an event taken by several sources (e.g. camera, phone, tablet, another camera, etc.); in this case photos will be shown in order of device first before date.

I imagine this would be a very simple change with only an preference dropdown and some very simple changes to the program logic.

Although it's not directly related to Nautilus requires pretty much the same code as bug 448979.
