Screenshot showing GIMP's Layers+ Dock almsot totally off the screen on the right.

I just installed the latest Lubuntu (17.04) and installed the latest standard GIMP in my repositories (2.8.20-1).
The Layers/Channels/Paths/Undo/Brushes/Patterns/Gradients combined dock (
Whew! - is there a shorter name for this initially standard opening combo dock?)
was so far to the right on my screen that I had to snag it with Alt-Drag (see screenshot).
I am using the proprietary NVidia 304 package (which I have been automatically installing since (so far) Nouveau always manages to crash something I try to use; I have not actually tried it yet with the new Lubuntu, I suppose I ought to try one day...), and my monitor is set to a resolution of 1792x1344 (where DO they get these wierd coordinates?)
Since GIMP remembers window placement between sessions, and I moved the window dock so that it was entirely visible, this is obviously no longer a problem,
but it would look bad for a new user of GIMP, and not everyone knows about Alt-Drag to lasso straying windows...

You wrote this as if you expected this to be different values - if yes, which ones and why?

No. I was both being thorough about what information I thought might be wanted,
and I also thought that the fact that they were funny-looking values might have had something to do with why the dock was almost off the screen.

I don't know how GIMP decides to set the x and y offsets for the upper left corner of the dock.
It is clear that if the x coordinate plus the width of the dock are added together, that they exceed the screen width.
Either GIMP is mis-reading the screen width, or miscalculating the initial x position of the dock.

It is possible that if a more common screen size were used, that the position selected for the dock would be either correct, or not so noticably wrong,
and therefore the miscalculation was not noticed by so many people.
Since it is easily compensated for (in my case, at least), more people may have had the problem, got around it, and not bothered to report it.

I realize that this isn't much of a problem (unless some people have the dock COMPLETELY off the screen), but that doesn't mean it is unimportant and doesn't need to be fixed.
If my apartment (for example), has a window that won't stay up, the fact that I can stick a book in the window to hold it up doesn't mean that the apartment manager oughtn't fix the window.

Would be interesting to know if this is a Lubuntu- or Ubuntu-specific issue, as I have not encountered it on other platforms.

If you could pass it on to the Lubuntu bug tracker (https://bugs.launchpad.net/lubuntu) or discuss it on their irc channels (http://lubuntu.me/support/), you and us might learn more about that issue.
Comment 4 scott092707 2017-05-01 23:59:30 UTC
I have now reported it at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gimp/+bug/1687506

since https://bugs.launchpad.net/lubuntu
appears not to have an approproiate place ("Project:") in which
GIMP can be classified...

We'll see if anyone responds...

If not, I'll try their IRC channel.

(by the way - do messages left there remain visible to people after
one leaves?)
Comment 5 Michael Schumacher 2017-05-02 07:30:47 UTC
Yes, messages left there remain. Whether anyone sees them depends on when they look at the channel again and on the size of their scrollback buffer. If you are expecting answers on IRC, is is usually a good idea to stay for hours.
