Description Alejandro HC 2017-04-17 23:34:23 UTC
Currently, no GNOME component allows to manage scanners graphically and although it is usual for the SANE-supported scanners to work automatically sometimes this doesn't happen.

On the other hand the user doesn't know if the scanner is correctly installed or not unless you install additional software as simple-scan and look at the list of available devices.

In addition a graphical configuration tool would allow:
• If the scanner is supported
• If there is a permission problem or the driver has not been autoloaded
• Installation of firmware or additional software is required (like libsane-extras)
• Sharing Scanners or Network installations

Today it's common to have multifunction devices (printer + scanner) that share some options and may have a common place in the interface.

Both Windows and MacOS allow this type of device to be easily managed, something that would help GNOME improve further.

macOS "Printers & Scanners" panel is relevant to see:

Interesting. I would suggest to have it in an another panel, allowing us to build with or without the panel.

It would be great. I think SANE also manages other capture devices like cameras.

Thank you.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new enhancement request ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
