Description f.alexander.wilms 2017-04-16 13:50:05 UTC
A great feature of Unity is the option to add additional elements to application launchers.

This way e.g. Nautilus' file operation progress or Geary's unread mail count could visible at a glance.

This is also of interest for Gnome extensions that move and/or modify the dock, like dash-to-dock and dash-to-panel: https://github.com/micheleg/dash-to-dock/issues/20

Building ontop of or supporting Unity's LauncherAPI (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity/LauncherAPI) could be an option, especially now that Ubuntu moves to Gnome. And 3rd party applications would support Gnome Shell out of the box.

KDE supports the LauncherAPI as well: http://blog.broulik.de/2016/01/on-being-more-convenient/
