Do not crash w/o primary monitor

I have a machine which does not have a monitor connected to gpu (nvidia). When I go from gdm to GNOME on Xorg gnome-shell crashes because is not checking for validity of some pointers.

The attached patch avoids some crashes but not all of them - most likely related to the bug 780285
