GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 780386
Support compressed files as mime-type handler
Last modified: 2021-06-18 15:50:18 UTC
So the user can simply choose what application is used by default with the regular app choosing, instead of the current setting in preferences. This has few drawbacks that we have to consider: - When using portals, we will have Nautilus as a mime type handler, a little confusing as to what nautilus will handle in this case. A preference seems more appropriate in this case, but let's see. - The vision of trying to make compressed archives transparent to the user minimizes, making the transition we wanted less effective. - The UI for compressed files handled by Nautilus when opening from somewhere else might be confusing (what do we do if we open a compressed file from say, chromium?) On the other hand, disadvantages of the current behaviour: - For users used to handle compressed files, it's not clear why Nautilus is handling them now. - The UX interaction of autodecompression needs more work, which could make the experience frustrating in some cases. - The UI for choosing an app to handle them doesn't correspond to the actual final behaviour, so it's inconsistent with other types. GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
