Description icemoonwolf1 2017-02-22 05:30:19 UTC
So I have been a GIMP user for a while and just started having trouble last night (2/20/17) when saving PSD files. It has never happened before and I even updated to gimp 2.8 (most recent update) today and it still didn't fix the problem.
I'm part of an ARPG group called Tokotas (wolf like creatures), and members have the option of designing their creatures.
*Screenshots provided*
http://prntscr.com/ebuxp5
This screenshot above is normal, what every PSD opens up to (bgs, submissive pose, Average pose, and dominant pose)

So I've primarily used gimp to design mine because it's worked the best until recently.
This next screenshot is what happens after it's exported as a PSD (same file as the original, the creature is just colored now)
http://prntscr.com/ebuz4r

This should not happen as in the past it has saved all of the layers in the original PSD. And no matter what I do it doesn't change or fix anything. And in order to properly use it in the group I mentioned before it HAS to be a PSD file.
I hope this matter can be resolved because I know a lot of other members who use GIMP to color the Imports for the Tokotas.

And to add now, the brush tool wont drag correctly and all I get is individual dots any time I lift my pen from my tablet. This is ridiculous.

So, any idea what has changed on your system last night to suddenly cause this?

PSD layer group support is only just being improved recently - I wonder why this would have worked any different of better ever before, as you state in your initial post.

Nothing that I know have has changed, any routine computer updates have never affected it before in the past so I'm not sure how they would now. And I just only updated GIMP to 2.8 at around 6pm 2/21/17. But after I updated it it still saved the PSDs in that bizarre manner that I showed in the previous screen shot where I reopened PSD.

This is beyond strange to me because this has never happened before.

Just to be precise here:

- you did work with this very same file before this issue happened, with an older version of GIMP, and encountered no issues
- then suddenly, the same file exported to PSD turned out to be incorrect. no changes to the original file or the gimp version used were done, or you have verified the behavior with an unchanged backup copy.
- then you decided to upgrade to GIMP 2.8.20, but this didn't change anything

If any of my assumptions are incorrect, please elaborate. In particular, you should check:

- if a file that used to be exported correctly is now exported incorrectly, with no changes to the file whatsoever (i.e. use one of your backup files you know to have been exported correctly, and try again)
- if other members of your group can reproduce the issue
- if you can make a sample PSD file available for public testing. make sure it exhibits that issue

Yes,
and I have tried another file that I haven't touched in a few days after finishing the design only to have it open with only 3 layers of the PSD. Even though when I had originally saved it it had all of its proper layers.
It was this other PSD to be exact http://sta.sh/01thmeggwh3h
I also had a friend open that PSD straight from downloading it from my sta.sh who doesn't use GIMP at all only to find it opened in the same manner for them as well even though I didn't edit the PSD at all, I had only re-opened it to see what would happen.
The PSD imports of the Tokotas are easily available to all members of the group. http://morganleslee.deviantart.com/art/Tokota-Import-Templates-650086428
The one I showed in the screen shots is what's a "Yeti"
and the file name is http://prntscr.com/ec799e
Now the Tokota titled "Anaiyu" is a normal but their PSDs are all set up the same way, just different lines.
This whole fiasco has caused me to delete GIMP completely because I'm afraid to open any of my other PSDs only to have them change to the 3 layer.
I made this small file of different layers
http://sta.sh/01g8jm9z73we
Re-downloaded GIMP
Opened it in GIMP and added a layer with a scribble
Before http://prntscr.com/ec7wgo
Saving http://prntscr.com/ec7xiv and http://prntscr.com/ec7y40
It didn't affect the test file so I'm trying the Tokota Import again
Colored with mouse and tried to use my pen and tablet again http://prntscr.com/ec808g
Saved it so I can find it easily http://prntscr.com/ec80kx
Re-opened it to have it turn everything into 3 layers again!

Um... should *I* be able to download a sample PSD file from http://morganleslee.deviantart.com/art/Tokota-Import-Templates-650086428 somewhere, or is this member only?

I can't find any obvious link to one there, at least.

You'd click the google drive link that's provided there in the artist description https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B3L4sET1cVVPWWJrdFIyR2FHZ28?usp=sharing To actually use the PSD it's members only. But there's no cost or anything to get it. Which is why it's available to all members. If you want to be extra sure about it then I'd suggest messaging the group itself to have an admin reply if you can use it to see why GIMP wont work with their PSDs anymore.

And I'm afraid to say that I had to completely uninstall gimp on my computer. I could not chance the PSDs getting changed like it did on the ones I showed you.
