Could you release a 1.8.4 for all the components which have fixes in their 1.8 git trees? This will benefit stable and long-term-support distributions.

There is a plan to do that yes, but no ETA.

Should also ensure that all known bugs with CVEs are backported to 1.8.4, not all are yet AFAIU

We had originally hoped to do this, but due to lack of time/manpower this never happened. Our build bots and QA infrastructure also don't build and test the 1.8 branch any more, so I don't see this happening now, sorry.
