It looks like whether or not you check "Antialiasing", the "Stroke selection" only strokes hard pixels.
To get smooth strokes, you have to make a selection to path, then a stroke.

Attached is an attempt of a selection. Upper one is a stroke to selection; bottom is a stroke to path. Both strokes used the same parameters (solid color, with 4px antialiasing).
