When using Nautilus with eg. Xfce there is no way to access the preferences window and you have to resort to dconf to configure Nautilus.

Not sure what you mean, why is not possible? Don't a nautilus icon appear in the headerbar to be able to use the app menu from there when using xfce?

no idea how xfce does it... we show a nautilus icon in the headerbar if the desktop environment sets it like that I think.

In any case, nothing we can do from nautilus, it's either gtk+ or xfce.

Thanks the issue was that my window decoration was missing the menu button.
