The same issue reported on Bug 734068. I took notice of it today on my Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installation.

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=734068#c11 says the problem should be fixed in Gedit 3.20. If you run gedit 3.20 and can reproduce the problem, please add a comment to bug 734068 with exact version information. Thanks!
