Description Michael Thayer 2016-10-25 08:12:29 UTC
I realise that this may be just a personal thing, but I often print a document with non-standard settings. For instance I may want to print a particular document two-pages-on-one, or another in landscape rather than portrait. Generally I do not want to print the next document with the same settings, but since those settings are remembered I also have to remember what I chose for the last print job to undo them again (or fiddle straight after printing with the non-default settings).

It would be lovely to find some way to resolve this. The simplest solution would simply be not to remember settings. More complex solutions could involve being able to specify default and one-off settings (for instance a check-box to remember the current settings). I would be happy with anything which improves the situation for me. If this is already doable then it may need to be made more obvious.

This depends on application which calls the print operation. It can use gtk_print_operation_get_print_settings() for getting the used settings after the print and set them for another print operation with gtk_print_operation_set_print_settings().
Which application do you use? (this bug should be reassigned to it)
Comment 2 Michael Thayer 2016-10-25 08:55:40 UTC
Thank you. This certainly affects Evince (in fact I got hit by it with something I had printing while filing this bug: it printed landscape instead of portrait and nicely expanded to fit the paper and clipped the rest). Off the top of my head I can't think of any other applications I regularly print from except Firefox, which is presumably not relevant to you.
Comment 3 Marek Kašík 2016-10-25 09:00:05 UTC
I'm reassigning this bug to Evince then.

Related or duplicated of Bug 664672

IIRC there was another similar, but I cannot find it right now.

This behaviour has been reported quite a few times already.
There is a workaround which involves making the config-directory for evince read-only.

To me it is highly annoying, as I very often print PDF-Documents with varying settings. Havin to remember to go through the whole print dialog on every job is really a pain especially when in a hurry.

I strongly vote for a checkbox saying "save this als new default" or - even better - for a dropdown list of named default settings.
Comment 6 Kai Lüke 2017-07-31 12:31:01 UTC
It would be really good to find a solution for this issue. Either with the proposed "save as default" or a way to say that the dialog settings are "only temporary".
