GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 773051
sub-optimal touch support
Last modified: 2021-07-05 13:25:53 UTC
I expected that Geary would be able to inherit all touch capabilities since it uses Gtk 3. But that doesn't look so. When trying to scroll through the email list view, the touch experience is very meager. This seems to only apply to the email list view. The folder list view and the email message view, both are well responsive. Geary: 0.11.2 Dist: Debian
Hi there, thanks for reporting this issue. Geary 0.11 is probably going to be sub-optimal for touch, since all messages in the conversation view (you mean the right-most frame, right?) is a single HTML view. However the development version has just been converted to use GTK widgets for individual messages, and hence should be much improved by comparison. Can you try compiling geary master from git and let me know if it is an imporvement? If there is some aspect that you are expecting to work but is not, please report it here so we can look into it.
Hello Michael, No. I meant the middle view, the one that lists the list of messages. That is the one not responding to touch events. The right most view, i.e. the email message view, is very well responsive, both in 0.11.2 and git+master.
Created attachment 337949 [details] screenshot Screenshot highlighting the problematic list region, that doesn't respond to touch events.
(In reply to Ritesh Raj Sarraf from comment #2) > > > The right most view, i.e. the email message view, is very well responsive, > both in 0.11.2 and git+master. Sorry for 3 separate comments for the same message. But the responsiveness issue still exists in current git master.
Oh okay, I see, thanks. So what specifically isn't working? Does it not scroll? Can you not select conversations? Something else? I don't have a touch screen with GNOME installed, so I can't test this out myself.
It does not scroll. It acts to the touch events more like a mouse pointer click event.
I change the version to master, since the reporter confirmed the bug also on git master of October 2016. Unfortunately I don't have a touch screen with GNOME installed where I could make a test. Librem 5 by Purism, although expensive ($600), might be a device which can attract new users: https://puri.sm/shop/librem-5/
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
