ALAC coded is provided by gstreamer1.0-libav package. The package is already installed in my system and all works fine.

I just uninstalled the package ( via "apt-get remove gstreamer1.0-libav" ), to check if plugin installation is possible via rhythmbox. But, the installation failed ( Refer https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772996 ). 

Tried installing the plugin twice. Rhythmbox displays the following log:

"Missing plugins installed. Updating plugin registry" should not be displayed, when the plugin has not been installed.

That happens if the plugin install result is GST_INSTALL_PLUGINS_PARTIAL_SUCCESS or GST_INSTALL_PLUGINS_SUCCESS.  If the plugin installer lies, that's its fault.

Is this really GStreamer's fault? GStreamer doesn't actually install anything.

It sounds to me like this should be moved to PackageKit ?
