GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 772945
"Open in Terminal" causes abnormal CPU usage, keeping the opened terminal "busy"
Last modified: 2016-10-14 22:47:46 UTC
When i select "Open in Terminal" from Nautilus menu, the terminal opens in the current folder (as expected) and the cursor rapidly blinks for a few seconds, not reacting to attempts to type anything at the prompt. During this period, the whole system freezes a bit and the processor usage reaches between 40% and 60% on a 6th generation Intel Core i7. This bug seems to only occur if i select "Open in Terminal" from Nautilus window menu, not if i use "Open in Terminal" from a pop-up contextual menu that shows up on a right click in an empty space in a Nautilus window. This happens in Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1 LTS.
version 3.14 is not maintained for 3 years now, that code changed entirely so it's hard to compare with current situation, where we not even allow to place a menu item in the window menu for extensions. So marking as obsolete, feel free to reopen if tested with 3.22, the current stable version.
I think i've got confused by the second version number Ubuntu puts on everything. My GNOME shell reports version 3.18.5, so, i think, my Nautilus is also 3.18. The full Nautilus version reported by `apt list nautilus` is `1:3.18.4.is.3.14.3-0ubuntu5`.
I am reopening it for now because i suppose that if Ubuntu GNOME uses GNOME 3.18, it is still maintained. I do not know how to install a newer version of GNOME.
The only maintained version is 3.22, one year and two releases after 3.18. Ubuntu uses too old software. Afaik there is no way to install a newer version in Ubuntu, apart of building from source. In this case Ubuntu would be the responsible of maintaining that version that is not supported from upstream. Closing again, since extensions cannot put menu items anymore in the view menu and therefore obsolete.
Feel free to reopen if that happens with the context menu option too (rather than the view menu)
