GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 77292
"New" menu items are strange.
Last modified: 2004-12-22 21:47:04 UTC
New Window opens my a Nautilus window on my home folder instead of the desktop. There seems to be no way to open the desktop as a list or other view from the desktop itself. CDE/Motif users will expect New Window to open a terminal. New Folder doesn't open a window at all, but instead makes a new folder icon on the desktop. This should grab the keyboard so it doesn't lose focus when the menu closes. New Terminal open a window, but it's not a nautilus window. What good is a terminal without a text-shell or some text-based program? Isn't the shell the important thing?
I've never been confused but ok.
actually now that i've thought about it you are correct. We should remove new folder and new launcher from the context menu and instead have create -> folder -> launcher These should be available in both the desktop and file manager views. also i think that we should consider removing new window and new terminal from the context menus as they seem strange. No other file manager i have used has new window in the context menu, with a graphical desktop you should just click on an icon on the desktop to open the folder. new terminal seems bad too, I would rather see an open with -> terminal option in the context menus of folders. see bug 81603.
As a separate note, and I probably should file this as a different bug, it might solve some of the issue if we have "Desktop" as one of the Go menu options. While we're adding that, we might want to add the rest of the obscure URIs (preferences, others? :) The fact that I have no idea where to find a list is part of the issue.)
More comments, because daveb's recent email inspired me. The create => stuff interface is good, and definately clearer than "New". I'd personally like to see more create items, in fact (abiword, gnumeric, etc.), based off the mime-type stuff. A 2.2 thing, but would be quite nice to integrate further. I definately think new window should stay. It's a fairly crucial feature for a lot of people, despite daveb's unhappiness with it (note that there's another bug somewhere specifically about this). New Terminal might be clearer if we go to Launch => terminal. Especially since this matches the "launcher" terminology. I disagree that it's a crack feature, as despite the wonderful strides naut has taken, it will never do everything a shell can do, esp for a power user. So the option to get "hardcore" should always be avaiable. And note that we don't *want* to do everything the shell can do - it'd probably be too many options and definately end up in the crack features arena.
A related issue is discussed in bug #82768, about adding a 'New/Create panel' option to the desktop context menu.
To me this seems like a dupe of bug 41787 which has been around since eazel days. Although I do prefer the idea of using "create" as suggested on this bug.
I'm marking this as fixed. In nautilus-2.5 there's no more "New Window"/"Open New Window" in the right-click context menus, the "New Folder/File" stuff is renamed to "Create Folder/File/etc.", and the New Terminal complaint is not applicable anymore.
