Description gnome.vrb 2016-08-31 01:06:40 UTC
I am aware that this issue strictly might not fall within rhythmbox ( NOTGNOME ). But, I still wanted to report it here to see, if something can be done on this issue. ( as I repeatedly see users complaining rhythmbox doesn't work in my distro ). This issue was reported by more users in Fedora's package manager against rhythmbox package.

1. I installed FC24, and I was not able to import mp3 files into rhythmbox. While trying import, rhythmbox said "Examining files 8 of 8" and bailed out.

2. I checked the system for gstreamer plugin installation.

[dev@dhcppc3 ~]$ dnf list installed | grep -i gstre
PackageKit-gstreamer-plugin.x86_64 1.1.3-2.fc24 @updates
gstreamer1.x86_64 1.8.3-1.fc24 @updates
gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free.x86_64 1.8.3-1.fc24 @updates
gstreamer1-plugins-base.x86_64 1.8.3-1.fc24 @updates
gstreamer1-plugins-good.x86_64 1.8.3-1.fc24 @updates

Now, a normal user would be wondering what next ?

To address this, is it possible for rhythmbox to pop up a message dialog saying that "Additional plugins need to be installed", and point to a Rhythmbox wiki FAQ link ? This would prevent users from opening rhythmbox bugs for the "not working in my distro".

https://gstreamer.freedesktop.org/data/doc/gstreamer/head/gst-plugins-base-libs/html/gst-plugins-base-libs-gstpbutilsinstallplugins.html explains how this is supposed to work. It worked last time I tried it. Maybe fedora broke it.

gstreamer broke it. thanks gstreamer!

Corresponding gstreamer bug: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=770643 ( thanks ).

The fix will be available in gst-plugins-base 1.8.4

As part of https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=772657, I tried installing the ALAC plugin using the gstreamer installer ( though I can manually install it ), without success.

I have built and installed "libgstreamer-plugins-base1.0-0" ( with the patch for bug 770643 ), and still the plugin installer couldn't find the correct package ( gstreamer1.0-libav ). I get https://bug772996.bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=337884.
