GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 768542
Hiding archived messages in GMail Important folder
Last modified: 2021-07-05 13:24:56 UTC
At least in the gmail important messages view, it continues to show archived messages that are marked as important. This may be a setting in gmail, but I suppose the default behaviour should be to not show archived messages either way. So maybe this is a bug and not a feature request, but I'm not sure.
Thanks for filing the bug. Rather than adding a pref for this, I wonder if it would be possible to arrange conversation in the folder them so it's useful for people that prefer it either way. One option would be to have messages in the Important folder grouped so that conversations that have non-archived messages in them appeared first, and the rest grouped after. Would that work?
That would work for me generally, but I think if I wanted to see all important messages, archived or not, that sort of non-temporally organised grouping would annoy me. Perhaps a hide/show button would be better, while keeping sort-by-date?

Perhaps a hide/show button would be better, while > keeping sort-by-date? Fair enough. There's a bug open for user-controlled grouping (Bug 766357), so for perhaps when the Important folder is selected, this could be offered as another option in whatever UI is implemented for that?
Sure, it wouldn't hurt to have what you propose (grouping on read/unread or archived/not) as an option. It would provide a work-around for this issue, but it wouldn't address the issue directly.
No problem, good to have that documented here. I'll add a depends on Bug 766357, just so that possibility doesn't get lost.
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org. As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately quite limited so not every ticket can get handled). If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent and supported software version, then please follow https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines and create a new ticket at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/geary/-/issues/ Thank you for your understanding and your help.
