Tamil fonts not rendering properly. I have added following text: வணக்கம், இவை தமிழ் எழுத்துருக்கள்.

Description of problem:
I am using fedora 22 system. I am unable to view the Tamil fonts correctly. It's in unstructured format. But it shows very well in konsole terminal.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
It happens to me every time when I follow the below steps

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Here is the guide on how to type in Tamil
  http://welinux.blogspot.in/2016/06/type-tamil-in-fedora-22-all-most-in-all.html
2. Select Tamil keyboard from input method
3. Open gnome-terminal
4. For example write any text inside a text file
  # vim foo.txt
   வணக்கம்
5. View it in terminal
  # cat foo.txt
//It will show Tamil fonts incorrectly

Actual results:
Shows Tamil fonts incorrectly.

Expected results:
It should show Tamil fonts properly.

Additional info: This problem is not only in Fedora 22 systems. It occurs on all Fedora, CentOS and Red Hat distributions as well as Debian distributions. The above method works well on Konsole. Konsole show Tamil fonts properly. So the problem might be in gnome-terminal.

I understand your desire you have your (presumably native) language's script displayed properly, but from the project's view this is by far not a critical bug (critical is something like a crash that might cause data loss). For the time being you can choose to use a different terminal emulator (yeah I hate to recommend this, I wish gnome-terminal/vte supported it correctly).

For the record, according to Wikipedia, about 1% of the world's population speak Tamil. (No idea about the percentage among potential vte users.)

Thanks for replying. So can I expect this bug solve in future? I like gnome-terminal more than other terminal emulators. I would like to show Tamil language fonts in gnome-terminal correctly.

It is not a duplicate bug. https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=584160 This bug is about Hindi fonts rendering problem. Tamil and Hindi fonts are not same. I am reporting about Tamil fonts rendering problem. Can you please try to fix the bug? I greatly help you if you need any help from me to resolve the bug.

Is IS indeed a duplicate of bug 584160; that bug is about all complex text, not just hindi (see its duplicates). Bug 584160 is where that will happen, and it has some hints about how it'll happen (using harfbuzz for shaping), and how it will not happen.
