Description Jonius 2016-06-13 11:56:34 UTC
Created attachment 329686 [details]
example, n overlays ü in münchen (Munique)

Some characters seem to be interpreted by some programs (e.g. Firefox) as if there width was 0 and therefore the next characters overlay them (see attachment where the n overlays the ü in the word münchen = Munique). This effects various letters like e.g. 'ü', which is important in German. On https://www.google.com/fonts/specimen/Cantarell you can see all effected letters, as they are not centered in there cell.

I think you're seeing an old bug, please test with the newest release.
Comment 2 David Prochnow 2016-06-14 05:07:20 UTC
I can recreate this bug in Firefox 47 under Gnome Shell 3.18 (Ubuntu 16.04).
Comment 3 Nikolaus Waxweiler 2016-06-14 05:10:01 UTC
Please test with the newest cantarell release.
Comment 4 Jonius 2016-06-14 07:27:36 UTC
Could you point out where to get (and how to install) the newest release so that I can test it?

Resolving as NOTGNOME since you’re using a very old copy hosted at Google Fonts, which is not controlled by us.

The latest version of Cantarell can be found here: https://download.gnome.org/sources/cantarell-fonts/0.0/cantarell-fonts-0.0.24.tar.xz

For instructions of installation, please use your favorite search engine. Linux distributions usually package the latest version, so you should be able to install a package from your distro’s archive, without needing to manually copy random font files found in websites. For instance, in Ubuntu you just need the “fonts-cantarell” package.

I have installed the latest version from the gnome link and the issue remains. This is definitely GNOME related. I have never installed a font from Google Fonts. I just gave you the link, because on that site it is recognizable which letters are effected.
Comment 7 Jonius 2016-06-20 08:15:32 UTC
I was wrong. The issue is fixed in the latest version, which is not yet available in Ubuntu GNOME 16.04. I had to remove the fonts-cantarell package first to be able to install and use the latest version.
