>Description:
I startx, X loads, then GNOME loads.  Icons start 
appearing on screen, the panel appears, but before 
icons appear, I get the error message.  Also, for the last
few weeks, I haven't been able to get the status
dock to show up completely.  Only the left-hand
dimpled rectangle and a small portion of the dock
appear, and then there would be no icons in it no matter
how many windows I had open.  This may be unrelated.

$ startx

X starts
GNOME startup screen appears
Desktop appears, bland panel appears,
