Description Allan Day 2016-04-05 14:48:59 UTC
Language packs are a feature of some distributions, which allow per-language resources to be installed, such as spell checking dictionaries or translated documentation.

I've recently updated the designs for the region and language panel to support language pack installation. These can be found here:

https://wiki.gnome.org/Design/SystemSettings/RegionAndLanguage#Tentative_Guidelines

The general approach that I've taken for the designs is to require that the language pack is installed before allowing a user to switch the corresponding display language.

These designs are tentative and may well require elaboration. The relationship between language packs and spell checking is one particular area that deserves more exploration.

Initial setup is another factor to consider - that's covered by bug 757121.

This issue was originally filed about language packs, but the same UI would be appropriate for installing Flatpak language extensions.

I'm working to implement this so Ubuntu can retire our language UI.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new bug report at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
