Description fe 2016-03-21 23:52:33 UTC
hi

on a new win10 machine i have installed the latest gimp from the gimp website download button .exe file - downloaded yesterday

I have downloaded, uninstalled rebooted and reinstalled several times - and also deleted my GIMP 2 profile folder and made a fresh one but the following problem still persists...

steps:
open gimp
make a new file
add a layer (initially i could add several layers but thats stopped now too)
* drag to reorder layers - nothing happens (line where to show where layer lands not even showing up)
* click green arrows to sort layers - works once only then stops
* click add another layer button - nothing happens
choose a tool (any one - eg bucketfill)
* choose a different tool - nothing happens (i can select a tool only once and then it stops working)

i can still select tools from the top menu options and they work - just not the toolbox icons

if i right click a layer so it shows a menu dialog and then click away without choosing anything i can then get one further tool selection - then it stops again

if i shrink the whole gimp window i can (sometimes) get another tool selection to work - and then it stops again...

i also have focus issues on most dialogs where only the first click works and further clicks do nothing

I have got gimp running fine on another win10 machine - so its possibly hardware related in some way?

I'm not having problems with any other programs
I dont have any gimp extensions loaded - just a clean install and clean profile

system spec:
CPU
Intel Skylake Core i7-6700 4 Core, hyperthreaded, 3.4Ghz, 8MB Cache, LGA1151 Platform
Motherboard
H170 Chipset motherboard, DDR4 support, SATA Express, M.2
Memory
16GB DDR4 RAM
SSD
240GB SSD for VIP storage selection
Hard Drive
2TB HDD for all other storage
Case
Cooler Master Silencio 452, Micro ATX, Silent, SD Card reader
Optical Drive
DVDRW
Operating System
Windows 7 Professional 64 bit OEM upgraded to win10

*cries* waaa - i miss my gimp already!

anyone have any suggestions?

Are you using any sort of antivirus? If so, does pausing/stopping it fix the problem?
Comment 2 fe 2016-03-22 01:36:53 UTC
I am using eset nod32
yes i have tried disabling it - no difference
Comment 3 Michael Schumacher 2016-03-22 07:21:21 UTC
Try to find the differences between the two Windows 10 systems you're running GIMP on. We're pretty much relying on an affected user to figure out the cause, there's not really anything we can do.
Comment 4 fe 2016-03-22 07:43:31 UTC
thanks michael - you can suggest things for me to try and fix it :)

differences
one it runs on is not an i7 - is a year older machine - has more things loaded - than mine

but uses the same virus protection and is running the same version of gimp

would it be any help to say try copying the profile folder from that machine to mine? even copy the program files folders? or will they break if i just copy them over?
Comment 5 fe 2016-03-22 07:46:50 UTC
another difference - the other machine has windoze office loaded
mine has open office and thunderbird
conflicts with those?

gimp ran fine with both those loaded on my old win7 machine

We've got some bug reports about other software interfereing with the GIMP UI, for example bug 710009 (that one is about Kaspersky Antivirus, and this is the reason why "running any antivirus applications?" is one of the usual questions).
Screen capture applications are known to cause this as well.

In all cases, we are effectively waiting for someone to come up with a useful hint.
Comment 7 fe 2016-03-29 12:44:46 UTC
Thanks for your reply Michael - I still havent got it going :(
the only screen capture app i have is the windows snippet tool

my nod32 virus thingy is whatever the latest version is because it keeps itself updated...
Comment 8 Michael Schumacher 2016-04-25 09:16:21 UTC
We've recently been told that Skype (with its screen grabbing/sharing) can cause this, too.
Comment 9 fe 2016-04-25 09:30:30 UTC
good spotting batman - i get 'some' functionality back if i exit skype completely - i can now change tools at least - i'm still having problems sorting layers though...
dragging layers has no effect - using the arrow buttons at the bottom of the layers dock works once and then stops.

thanks for the hint :D

Can you try disabling your antivirus momentarily for testing functionality in GIMP? I'm wondering if it's a double-whammy of Skype + antivirus that may be causing issues for you?

This is likely bug 780979.

The current development release GIMP 2.9.8 installer - available from https://www.gimp.org/downloads/devel/ - contains a GTK+ patch for this - can you try if this fixes the issue for you?
Comment 13 Michael Schumacher 2017-12-25 21:46:10 UTC
fe, can you check this with GIMP 2.9.8?
Comment 14 fe 2017-12-26 05:12:32 UTC
fixed :D
Comment 15 Michael Schumacher 2017-12-26 09:50:28 UTC
Thanks, this confirms it as the same issue.
