I have tested this now in two VM installations of Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 Beta 1 and I have got the same results both times. After using the gnome3 and gnome3-staging PPAs to upgrade to GNOME 3.19, if I try to open any applications from the Activities Overview they don't open, instead, gnome-shell freezes and crashes so that I can't do anything, in about 5 minutes or so the screen goes completely black, stays like that for a few seconds and then gnome-shell restarts... If I try to launch anything from the Activities Overview the story starts again...

Though I am able without any issue to launch applications from Docky, Terminal, and I am able to launch Terminal just fine with CTRL + ALT + T... So all is well unless I try to launch an application from the Activities Overview...

I initially reported this issue here but thought I should also do so upstream: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/+bug/1553825

Further information is available on the issue on LaunchPad such as logs

From your description and since that's a 32 bit GNOME I'm pretty confident that's bug 762763 which is already fixed on master. Re-open this bug if it still happens after you get mutter 3.19.92
