GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 763138
Single Window Mode lag
Last modified: 2017-02-21 10:09:40 UTC
When GIMP is in Single-Window-Mode and not in fullscreen, it lags to the point of not being of any use. Selecting a menu bar item works fine, also the tooltips for the drawing tools pop up on time, but the main window content needs up to several seconds to react to clicks and even hovering over a drawing tool. This bug does not appear when Single-Window-Mode is turned off or the Single-Window-Mode is used in fullscreen. For this bug it did not matter whether an image was loaded or not. No rulers were visible, I do not use a tablet and the resizing the window did not reduce the lag. This bug also affected the 2.8.14 version supplied via the ubuntu repositories, my current 2.8.16 version was supplied via ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp I ran top while moving the mouse over the window: - "Xorg" uses between 15% and 25% - "Compiz" uses between 5% and 10% - "gimp-2.8" uses at most 5% "dpkg-query -W xorg" returned "xorg 1:7.7+7ubuntu4" My System: OS: Ubuntu 15.10 (Kernel 4.2.0-23-generic x86_64) CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz GPU: Nvidia Geforce GT 630M (using the Nvidia driver 361.28)
Update: The bug also affects the main window in Non-Single-Window-Mode when an image (96x96 pixels) is opened, the other windows do not lag.
What happens when you disable Compiz?
with compizconfig-settings-manager I disabled all effects, now all sorts of different problems arise: Non-Single-Window-Mode: - In 19/20 restarts I seem to be affect by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1072206 - When it actually works, the bug remains like before Single-Window-Mode: - On some restarts all works fine, on the most the bug remains and GIMP stays useless
I guess the best approach is to take this to the Ubuntu bug tracker then - and have them upstream it if they think it is a bug in GIMP or GTK+.
And what happens when you get rid of Compiz altogether?
