GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 761929
Initial setup screen - layout issues, doesn't encourage online account setup
Last modified: 2018-01-24 15:17:50 UTC
Created attachment 320961 [details] screenshot and mockup There are various issues with the initial setup screen: * It is rather mechanical, and isn't very upbeat. * Visually it lacks balance: all the content is stuck to the top of the page. * It also looks like it needs a more prominent heading. * It doesn't explain or encourage the user to set up an online account, if that's where they keep their contacts. I've attached a mockup to resolve these issues. Most of the suggestions are simple string changes. The only other thing is the addition of a heading and some padding. A more effective but also more difficult approach would be to suggest a shortlist of online accounts from the setup screen, and to allow those accounts to be directly added (by clicking on them): https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/master/contacts/png/setup-alt.png (This isn't strictly required for this bug, and I only mention it because it is related.)
I implemented the mockup in the attachment as of commit 06d81ae on master. I'll leave this bug open in case someone wants to work on the mockup provided by the attachment.
The ground work for Allan's mockup can be found at branch wip/nielsdg/setup-add-accounts
Allan: with the new mockups [1], how do you suggest we do this if the user has already setup an online account? [1]: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/gnome-design-team/gnome-mockups/master/contacts/aday/contacts-wires.png
