screenshot of empty chat view in polari 3.19.x.

When entering a channel for the first time, the user interface might seem slightly alien and confusing, since the whole chatview is empty.

Here's some suggestions that I think would be nice:
- Welcome the user to the channel.
- Use the space to explain what this white area is and what you can do with it.
- perhaps write a status message "bastianilso has joined the chat", to put in the first piece of content?

If the channel contains no one else than the user, this might also be a great opportunity to:
- suggest the user to invite other users to the room (via an IRC link, or via IRC's INVITE machinery)
- explain where the user can customize the channel modes, set topic etc.

Attaching a picture of how slack handles empty channels, for reference.

I created a design page for this:

Apologize for that, I wrote the above message. I appear to have been logged into my friend's account.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of Polari, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/polari/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
