GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 761249
Right-clicking on an application in the Activities Overview list should give you options but also display program information
Last modified: 2016-01-28 15:43:08 UTC
In Unity when one searches for an application, if they then right-click on the application icon it provides the user with more information and focusses on the program and puts it in a sort of square in the centre of the screen (so basically it looks quit nice and slick). It puts the application icon big next to the title on the right and has a description of the application underneath, it then also provides options such as "Open" and "Uninstall" (I think so anyway, it's been a while since I used Unity). Anyway, I think that when one searches for an application or views the listing of them in the Activities Overview that they should be able to right-click on the icon and get something similar rather than just a menu with a few options. It would probably be good if the same was done for other file types and not just applications. I initially reported this issue here, but was told to also do so upstream: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-gnome/+bug/1538234
Thanks for taking the time to report this. This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but please feel free to report any further bugs you find. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 643043 ***
Though in some ways the bug this has been marked a duplicate of is very similar to this one, it is not exactly what I would have envisaged. I was thinking more of what they have in Unity rather than just adding options to the slightly ugly right-click menu which is already there, in fact the "Uninstall" option was just one option I gave an example of having, and not necessarily something that would definitely be there, the most important thing would be so that one would get a full description of the application and to be able to view more information on it in the Activities Overview rather than having to go and look somewhere else for that information, so I wouldn't really say that this is a duplicate of that, maybe very similar, but I'm not asking for exactly the same thing and don't really like the ideas given in the comments to that bug report.
(In reply to cooks.go.hungry from comment #2) > the "Uninstall" option was just one option I gave an example of having, > and not necessarily something that would definitely be there, the most > important thing would be so that one would get a full description of the > application Please don't let the title of the other bug fool you - what we have is a "Show Details" item in the context menu, which will open the app's details page in gnome-software (icon, screenshots, description plus options to launch/uninstall the app or visit its website). That's very much what you are asking for, except that the information is shown in a window and not directly in gnome-shell.
Ok, I still think that it would look nicer if this information could be displayed in gnome-shell directly without having to open up a new application. Also, perhaps the title of the other bug could be changed to something more representative of what is being requested in it now even if that was not the original request, as it is somewhat misleading.
