GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 760483
Google Talk no longer allows password authentication
Last modified: 2018-05-22 19:07:37 UTC
Google Talk no longer works with raw passwords any more. I tried to log into my account while discussing bug 759828 and received a scary-sounding email from Google that read: "Sign-in attempt prevented [...] Someone just tried to sign in to your Google Account xxxx@gmail.com from an app that doesn't meet modern security standards." It might be possible to add an account with a so-called app-specific password, but we really shouldn't be advertising password-based Google accounts so prominently in the UI anymore.

Refer http://superuser.com/a/869034/432734 Hmm... so that swaps the "scary sounding email" for a "less secure" tag. Doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. I don't want GNOME apps to be considered "less secure". Empathy works just fine with OAuth2, provided you created the account in gnome-online-accounts, so we should just use that. Also, it is not a very convincing user experience if the user has to go to some web page somewhere and fiddle with some settings to get his instant messaging client to work.
