Description inf3rno 2015-12-26 16:40:08 UTC
I have the on/off toggle on the website, by turning on an extension, it shows me a popup, where I can select install or cancel. When I select install, the website shows that the extension is turned on, but nothing happens. The extension does not show up in the extensions directory. When I refresh the webpage the toggle switches back to off.

I tried out these extensions:

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/9/systemmonitor/
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/208/panel-settings/
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/898/mmod-panel/ - dock workspace alternative
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/439/extensions-shortcuts/

None of them worked.

I managed to install an extension from the website. So this is probably a version compatibility issue. I think there should be an indication about wrong version or the system should automatically filter the extensions by version compatibility to avoid misunderstandings. I leave this open, maybe somebody wants to add this version check feature to the website, or fix it if it is already added, but does not work properly.

The extensions website is unmaintained. It relies on an NPAPI browser extension to be installed on your machine. The way that browsers allow extensions is changing as well. You pretty much need Firefox as browser. As a result the situation is pretty bad for extensions.gnome.org.

Latest plan I heard is that they'll integrate gnome-shell extensions into the (GNOME) "Software" application.
