Description Bakhtiar Hasmanan 2015-12-05 23:03:44 UTC
I'm Windows user, and the impression when I first saw GTK3 filedialog is inferior to GTK2's. After I read Mcclassen's blog I know now how to show fullpath addressbar, that is type "/"

But there seem no tooltip explaining this, or other hints yet "/" make no sense or means to windows users. I hope there is a tooltip explaining "if you type this then" when hovering to make it obvious.

You can also use Ctrl-L to bring up the location entry. The new path bar that will be merged for 3.20 will hopefully make this a bit more obvious

I just upgraded my linux box and thought ill of the new editor Mint packaged (xed) because I could not fro love or money, find a way to paste a path into the file chooser.

Turns out it's not xed but the latest gedit has it too when I installed that and it's a GtkFileChooser issue.

I infer from this report its a jump from GTK2 to GTK3 that exposed me to this.

I'd say a hint at bare minimum is mandated by any UX considerations but my recollection of the gedit GtkFileChooser before upgrading is that it had a button to the left to the navigation breadcrumbs with something like a pencil on it.

What are we expecting in 3.20 Mathias and when will that arrive?

And can we upgrade on exist Linux distros underneath all the apps there or doe it have to trickle through rebuilds of all the apps that use it before we see it in the field?

Still no new pathbar
Comment 4 Bernd Wechner 2016-09-15 02:04:43 UTC
Any idea about 3.20 timelines and such? Or where to find them?

This is a serious UX glitch in modern Linux distros that represent a large step backwards for me. I was happy to introduce my family to Mint 17.3 and they seem pretty happy, but wowsers this "feature" will have them frustrated with any "file open" dialog in Mint 18 as it has me and others.

Fortunately I can help them now, but hey, it lends a real geeky impression to their experience of Linux not a home PC friendly impression. A thing Linux has been laboring to overcome for a long time and been doing well at.
