Gimp becomes slow and unusable for a normal workflow speed when i set the longest side of my painting to 3000 pixel

my current settings. 
General Preferences>environment>
total memory space = 4 GB max size for new images = 500 MB
dpi is set always on 300 dpi because i need printable images.
