GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 758679
Draw borders around month-view calendar cells
Last modified: 2017-04-17 18:20:40 UTC
In Month View, GNOME Calendar puts the number for the date at the bottom of the calendar cell. This can be confusing, especially for users coming from Evolution (which draws the date at the top of the cell), because GNOME Calendar event labels are drawn closer to the number for the date cell *above* them. This problem is clearly illustrated by Bug Report #750895 -- filed by a user who actually thought GNOME Calendar had shifted all events a week into the past. One possible solution would be to draw darker borders around each cell, so that it's easier to see how event labels and their corresponding dates are grouped together.
Sorry, I guess I don't understand how Bugzilla automatically links things. Here's the link to Bug Report #750895 -- https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=750895

We actually draw lines around the cells. Can you tell us where there's no lines?
Created attachment 317995 [details] screenshot of GNOME Calendar with only holidays labeled. Yes, there are already lines around each cell, but these borders are very faint -- almost the same color as the background, and easy to miss for users with less-than-perfect vision or who have old monitors. (I personally fall into both categories.) If you can't see the borders, then the user would tend to associate an event label with the date of the closest number -- which, in the current UI design, actually corresponds to the *previous* week. So, as in the attached screenshot, if users miss the calendar cell borders, they might be confused when it seems as if New Year's Eve is on December 24th instead of the 31st. I was confused by this issue when I first tried GNOME Calendar... and again, so was the user who filed Bug Report #750895. You might think of a better solution, but one way to help make things clearer is to make the cell borders a little darker. Another way, perhaps, would be to make it so that the corresponding date is always the closest number to an event label.

Created attachment 318907 [details] [review] month-view: make lines stronger The current lines are very light and people with visual issues may not find them easy. To fix that, make these lines slightly stronger, enough to make them clearly visible.
