load reference images into the navigator dialog

the navigator is very useful - but i miss the ability to use picture references in Gimp, (painter need always ref objects, you cant know every detail) so why not loading reference images into the navigator too. Therefore, we would need two view-options:

1-	navigation of the current image
2-	navigation of a chosen image with the gtk-chooser

Could you please explain, how this is different/better from:

1. Opening reference image in GIMP.
2. Switching back to your project.
3. Enabling Navigation dockable dialog.
4. Enable images list for the Navigation dock, then disable Auto option and choosing your ref image.

?

Thanks!

:D
very simple answer: because i need the reference on-screen when i paint. Switching back and forth - wouldnt be funny

I specifically mentioned disabling the Auto option. Pretty please just try it first.
Comment 4 Jo 2016-02-13 13:43:00 UTC
what images list for the Navigation? what auto-option ? i use version 2.8.16

i have to guess what you mean if youre serious.
1) open an image (original)
2) open an image (reference)
3) Navigator is in place
4) ?
Comment 5 Alexandre Prokoudine 2016-02-14 01:04:42 UTC
1. Move the navigation dock out of the sidebar.
2. Click the triangle button for dock's options.
3. Enable 'Show image list'.
4. Click 'Auto button' to disable autofollowing.
5. Select your other image.
6. Use the Navigation dock for looking at the reference image just like you asked for.

interesting.
The only problem is that the detached navigator stays not on top of the main window, when you click elsewhere. Therefore, its only a trick valid for one second, so to say.

? Why removing such features from the docked version of the navigator ?

It does for me on both Windows and Linux. What's your setting for 'Hint for docs and toolbox' on the 'Window Management' page of the 'Preferences' dialog?
Comment 8 Jo 2016-02-15 21:06:44 UTC
i got it - and i tested all 3 window display modes with both the buids of Lisanet and Gimp.org, but without success. With x11, this worked, i remember. Im on Mac OsX.

Lets finalize this way: if the navigator offers already the features i need, then why not unlocking them for the docked version of the navigator too?
Would simplify life - btw. floating windows are somehow…old baken, if not strictly necessary. Lets clean up the clutter whoever possible.
