Description daniel.takai 2015-10-05 20:07:04 UTC
Starting Gimp on El Capitan does not work. After OS update, Gimp does not start, stops while loading fonts. After reinstalling Gimp, the process freezes immediately on startup, no window shown.
Comment 1 Michael Schumacher 2015-10-05 20:11:28 UTC
Can you check whether GIMP is building the font cache on first use? A file system monitor application will show accesses to all the font file you got on your system in this case.

Not all, but some font files are open. Here's the complete list:

Comment 3 Jonathan Tait 2015-10-06 07:30:14 UTC
FYI:
Another user has just complained of similar problems on OSX 10.11 (El Capitan):
http://gimpforums.com/thread-gimp-and-osx-el-capitan-i-m-stuck
but he reports 100% CPU usage.

A quick Google search for "gimp el capitan" [sic] turned up this:
https://www.reddit.com/r/OSXElCapitan/comments/3dztk2/does_gimp_work_with_1011/
Interestingly, the users say that Partha's McGimp 2.9 *does* work okay on 10.11, and moreover, the most recent post in that thread (made just yesterday) says that having installed Gimp 2.9, Gimp 2.8.14 then works okay as well!!!
Although it is, of course, possible that the users just weren't waiting long enough for the font-cache building to complete before aborting.

On a broader note, there do seem to be many applications having problems on OSX 10.11:
http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/os-x-el-capitan-working-not-working-apps.1890772
...and Gimp is mentioned again here:
http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/os-x-el-capitan-working-not-working-apps.1890772/page-10#post-21466112

...and a headache for GutenPrint (quote: "El Capitan users are having a lot of pain right now.")

@daniel.takai
How long did you allow Gimp to run before aborting ?
Font-cache building can take a long time (20 minutes or more) and is particularly noticeable after updating the OS.
The usual advice given on the forums now is just to start Gimp running and then leave it alone - don't even touch the keyboard or the mouse, just get up, walk away and go do something else for at least an hour. (Yes, really!) When you come back, Gimp will probably be up and running and you will then have no further problems. I cannot guarantee that will work in this case (because there may be a genuine problem with OSX 10.11) but perhaps you could give it a try ?
Comment 4 daniel.takai 2015-10-06 12:24:57 UTC
Ok, the process does not respond but will eventually terminate and Gimp starts. So for me this is fixed, thanks! However from a usability view it would be better if some kind of message was relayed to the user.
Comment 5 Michael Schumacher 2015-10-06 14:18:36 UTC
FIXED is used when a code change has been applied that resolves the issue.

In this case, this is a duplicate of a known bug: bug 449848
