Description Jo 2015-09-24 10:36:36 UTC
the -merge visible- command is very useful and i like it as it is, but in some situations i want an alternative similar command to merge visible layers instead to create a new layer on top (similar to flat down but without dialog)
advantages: to clean up superfluous layers and to get an unified layer
Comment 1 Michael Schumacher 2015-09-25 08:46:15 UTC
Would this have the same result as copy visible followed by paste as new layer?

yes
Comment 3 Jonathan Tait 2015-09-25 22:39:51 UTC
Isn't that the same as -Layer > New from Visible- ?

with th "merge visible" -command i meant exactly the command "New from Visible", which is the object of our discussion.

So we should resolve this as NOTABUG, or maybe even INVALID.

i purposed to add an alternative command so that merge visible merges also the layers instead to create a new one on top and you want to delete this enhancement?

its a little tweak of already existing code, so whats wrong with the report ??
Comment 7 Michael Schumacher 2015-09-29 15:59:52 UTC
The previous comments (comment 2 and comment 4, in particular) gave us the impression that what you want does already exist in GIMP (even 2.8).
Comment 8 Michael Natterer 2015-10-09 21:08:20 UTC
I still don't get what you want here. *Please* try to be clear, we both
have "merge visible" which deleted the previous layers, and "new from
visible" which keeps them. What exactly is missing?
Comment 9 Jo 2015-10-14 21:42:53 UTC
to introduce an alternative to merge visible.

this alternative would merge visible layers, but literally. The current merge visible cmd merges copies of the visible layers.

both "merge visible" under "layers" and "image" behave in the same way: showing a dialog before merging.

"new from visible" instead merges without a dialog in between, but merging copies of the visible layers.

my request was to have a "merge visible" without dialog.
