Description Daniel Cachapa 2015-09-19 17:05:43 UTC
Users who have set keyboard shortcuts for switching to specific workspaces (e.g. ctrl-n -> workspace n) should be able to also use that shortcut to drag a window into that workspace.

Currently initiating a window drag disables workspace switching by any means.

The drag + workspace shortcut combo was a feature of BeOS, and has also recently been implemented in MacOS X (though the implementation in the latter case is inferior - you need to slightly move the window in order to "bring" it with you into the new workspace).

This used to work a very long time ago (meaning 15 years ago or so) before GNOME switched to the Metacity window manager. From IRC discussion, it doesn't seem to have ever worked with Metacity.

It's pretty low priority because:

 - It's not useful with the default keybindings - you have to have something one-handed like Super-F1/2/3/4 configured to use it.
 - The GNOME Shell overview is designed to be the primary way to move windows to a workspace, and provides a more visual experience.

But if someone came up with a patch to make it work, I think we'd take it.

GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version, then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
